What did she study?:
Dolly Chugh’s studies were focused on the “unconscious bias” (automatic mantal shortcuts our brain takes when processing information about people), moral psychology and bounded ethicality. Her main idea was for individuals and organizations to stop aiming to be perfectly “good” morally but acknowledging biases and working continuously to improve.
Why is this interesting for a company?
Companies operate in increasingly diverse and global environments and managing unconscious bias is crucial for an inclusive leadership, a fair decision-making and a good employee engagement
What did she identify?
She analyzed that people often see themselves as “good people” but fail to recognize their own biases and that can easily create a gap between intentions and actions
Managerial implication
Create inclusive systems that account for unconscious bias and encourage a growth mindset about ethics: treat diversity and inclusion as skills to practice.
Boundary condition
Employees must feel safe to discuss about mistakes and biases without fear of punishment. Must be gradual, not immediate.
