Aline Gatignon studies cross-sector collaboration between companies and nonprofits, especially in emerging markets where weak governments fail to address problems like poor infrastructure, limited education, and weak regulations. Her research is interesting for companies because these social challenges directly affect their ability to grow and operate successfully. She finds that when resources are scarce, firms and nonprofits are pushed to innovate together, creating solutions that benefit both society (improved health, education, logistics) and business (new markets, skilled workers, stronger supply chains). For managers, the implication is clear: collaboration with nonprofits should not be seen as charity but as a strategic necessity to ensure long-term success. However, this applies mainly in emerging market contexts, since in developed economies stronger government systems often already address these basic needs.
