Physical biology approaches biological systems using quantitative methods to characterize their physical and physico-chemical properties and to study how living organisms organize themselves at different scales of length and levels of complexity.
The course is open to all Master tracks in Biology and Biological Physics and covers a wide range of topics in physical biology ranging from the study of single molecules up to cells and organisms. Topics are presented by specialists in the field, with a very transdisciplinary perspective. It is indeed important to realize that modern biology benefits from advanced concepts and non-invasive methods from different disciplines and in particular from physics. This course also provides new insights into topics in systems biology, biophysical approaches to epigenetics, and new approaches to study molecular interactions and biomimetic systems.
Goals :Understand molecular motors and switches in the cell: biological structures and functions, mechanisms, experimental and theoretical study methods;
Understand modern experimental methods and their application in-vitro and in cellular conditions;
Understand the underlying general physico-chemical principles of how biological macromolecules function;
Understand the impact of new microscopy and spectroscopy methods in biochemistry, biophysics, biology, bioengineering, and biotechnology;
Analyze the impact of knowledge on individual molecules at cellular and tissular levels;
Understand the outcome of biomimetic systems in order to understand and reproduce main biological systems and functions
Identify the main areas of current development of these techniques and their future technical developments in biology, bioengineering, and medicine.
